A relaxed performance is a specially adapted show, modified for adults and children who might benefit from a more relaxed environment. Typically, they are for people who have autism or have sensory communication disorders or/and learning difficulties.
We recognise that a standard performance of a show can be unsettling for people with the above conditions. This could be because of the darkness of the auditorium, the loud music and sudden noises on stage, not to mention the expectation that your child must sit still and quiet for a relatively long period of time.
During these performances, we take a more relaxed view of Front of House etiquette, including an open-door policy so that you can come and go as you please.
Key features of a relaxed performance:
- House lights will remain on for the duration of the performance so that it is not too dark.
- Lighting and sounds levels will be adjusted to softer levels so that the performance is more accessible if you have sensory sensitivities. This will mean loud bangs, flashes, pyrotechnics strobe lighting will be removed from the performance.
- You can make a noise during the show.
- There will be an opportunity to meet the cast behind the characters before the show.
- Auditorium doors will be fixed open for free movement throughout the performance.
- Our Circle Lounge will be available as a ‘chill-out’ space if the performance becomes overwhelming for your child.
